- Entry is open to anyone resident in the United Kingdom who has not had a novel or book of short stories published.
- Entries must be the original work of the entrant and must not have been commercially published or broadcast, have won any previous national award or be entered for any other current competition.
- The award is for an open-theme short story, maximum 2000 words (children’s stories and poetry excluded). Entries exceeding the word limit will be disqualified.
- Entries must be clearly typed, in English, in double-spacing on one side only of white A4 paper. Please ensure the title appears at the top of the first page of your story (even if you have a title page). Please number pages & staple. No folders or paper clips please.
- Names and addresses of entrants must NOT appear on manuscripts but should be shown clearly on the entry form.
- Competitors may send any number of entries provided that the appropriate fee of £7 for one entry and £5 for each subsequent entry is enclosed. Cheques should be made payable to Legend Writing Award.
- Entrants wishing to receive an optional individual critique should enclose a second copy of their entry plus £5 critique fee. Critiques will be available after the results are announced.
- The closing date is 31st August 2008.
- The decision of the judging panel is final.
- There are six cash prizes for 2008:
1st £500, 2nd £250, 3rd £100, 3 runners-up x £50.
Please note no entrant may win more than one prize.
- Prize-winners will be notified by mid-November.
- Results will be notified on this website early in the New Year or can be posted if a stamped addressed envelope marked RESULTS is enclosed.
- Please do NOT send entries by recorded delivery (this could actually delay receipt). Receipt of entries will be acknowledged if a stamped, addressed postcard is enclosed.
- Copyright will remain with the winning authors but acceptance of the prize money will indicate the author’s agreement to publication in a Hastings Writers’ Group anthology, for which there will be no further fee.
- Members of Hastings Writers’ Group, or those who have been members during the previous two years, and their families, are not eligible to enter.
Important: Please check that your entry meets the above rules and conditions
